Centuries-old churches and piazzas in Texas A&M’s study abroad venue in Italy were ideal subjects for design students learning to use sophisticated imaging equipment in a workshop directed by Robert Warden, director of the Center for Heritage Conservation.

Building conservation experts discussed the unique challenges facing historic structures on university campuses in Texas during “Campus Heritage,” the 2016 Texas A&M Center For Heritage Conservation Symposium, Feb. 26-27, 2016.

The iconic west facade of the Alamo is slowly wearing down. Researchers from the Center for Heritage Conservation at Texas A&M have found that the base of a decorative column flanking the Alamo’s main entrance has lost from 5 to 7 centimeters of its limestone surface since 1960.

Visitors to Pointe du Hoc in Normandy, France, can once again visit a cliffside monument honoring the World War II heroism of U.S. Army Rangers, led by a future Texas A&M president, following a $6 million site restoration based on information gathered by the university’s Center for Heritage Conservation.

Researchers from the Center for Heritage Conservation visited Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay June 6-11, 2011 where they used sophisticated surveying equipment to collect data to create detailed 2- and 3-D models of the island and its historic structures for documentation purposes.
