Students make field day trips to diverse construction businesses

Texas A&M construction science students fanned out Nov. 1 to visit five construction-related businesses across the state were they viewed the latest construction, material production and manufacturing practices as part of their fall 2013 semester field day activities

The Department of Construction Science hosts the daylong event each semester for students to experience of the challenges and rewards of construction industry work.

This semester’s destinations included Acme Brick in Elgin, [Cherry Companies] (http://cherrycompanies.com/) which provides building demolition and recycling services, [Fluor] (http://www.fluor.com/pages/default.aspx) , an engineering and construction company in Houston, Nucor Steel in Jewett and [Heidenfels Enterprises] (http://heldenfels.com/) in San Marcos.

The department hopes to pique student interest with venues that demonstrate the construction industry’s diversity, said George Eustace, senior lecturer of construction science

In downtown Houston, for instance, students visited a site where Cherry Companies is removing the remains of the recently [demolished] (http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nbc-news/53084436#53084436) Macy’s department store to its South Houston headquarters where the recovered concrete, steel and other materials will be recycled.
