Brody appears in PBS Newshour report eyeing post-Ike Galveston

Sam Brody, professor of urban planning at Texas A&M, was interviewed in a [report] (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/july-dec11/galveston_09-22.html) on the PBS Newshour about Galveston’s efforts to build a healthier city after 2008’s Hurricane Ike.

Brody, also the director of Texas A&M University at Galveston’s [Center for Texas Beaches and Shores] (http://www.tamug.edu/CTBS/) , appears 4:28 into the [video] (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/health/july-dec11/galveston_09-22.html) .

With its vulnerability to hurricanes, all the rebuilding could be washed away the next time a storm comes through, Brody told the Newshour.

Because Galveston is a barrier island, building a sustainable, resilient community that lasts for generations is an extremely difficult thing to do, he said.

Brody, who holds the George P. Mitchell ’40 Chair in Sustainable Coasts, is also the director of the [Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center] (http://archone.tamu.edu/hrrc/) ’s Environmental Planning & Sustainability Research Unit.
