Dave Walvoord, former student and DreamWorks digital effects supervisor visits campus

Dave Walvoord

Dave Walvoord, former MS-Viz student, returned to campus and delivered a talk on “Lighting for Animation.” During Dave’s presentation he discussed the challenges DreamWorks faced when lighting the film Kung Fu Panda. Dave’s presentation went beyond the film to expand upon the techniques used by lighting technical directors and their ability to problem solve. Computer generated images give artists the ability to bend the rules of physics and light, but Dave emphasized the importance of maintaining a level of visual believability. Among the many subtopics of CG lighting Dave talked about stylized lighting, color palates, shadows, silhouettes, environmental lighting, character lighting and how all of it should be used to support the story of the film.
